Baby Signs ®

In our Infant and Wobbler Rooms, we utilize the Baby Signs ® program.  This program encourages communication with children who may not yet be able to express themselves verbally.  It provides infants and wobblers the ability to communicate wants and needs to their caregivers at an early age.  Baby Signs books are read aloud and songs are sung with the children using the signs.  Signs are always presented both verbally and with the hand motion, therefore encouraging language development as well.

Baby Signs ® Research

In addition to helping babies learn to talk and jumpstarting their intellectual and cognitive development, a number of very important social-emotional benefits were also revealed.

Drs. Susan Acredolo and Linda Goodwyn conducted over two decades of scientific research and found that using sign language with hearing babies:

  • reduces frustration, biting, and other aggressive behaviors
  • helps parents and teachers be more observant and responsive
  • builds trust between babies and their parents and caregivers
  • allows babies to share their worlds, revealing just how smart babies really are
  • promotes positive emotional development
  • boosts babies' self-confidence and builds self-esteem

Your baby will also enjoy peek-a-boo and patty cake so he or she can begin to understand language.  And when baby has had adequate stimulation, we provide a calm and separate sleep area for resting.

  1. “Recently (my son) attended his Kindergarten Open House and received the list of “things your children should be able to do prior to entering kindergarten.” I was shocked at how far advanced the curriculum at AppleTree has prepared him!”

  2. “AppleTree has not only provided an age-appropriate education with ample opportunity for challenge, but also a safe, caring, and compassionate community for which our daughter feels strongly a part of”
